The 700 acre Herron Playa Wildlife Area is located 4.5 miles Southwest of Spearville in Ford County. It is in an area dominated by a mix of cultivated ground and CRP. The historical playa basin is approximately 800 acres in size. In the early 1950's a drainage ditch was constructed to drain the playa. Today the area is comprised of 160 wetland acres, 360 native grass acres and 180 cropland acres. In 2003 a wetland restoration project was completed on the property. This project was comprised of constructing two dikes to impound water in two separate marshes. An irrigation well is located on the property and is used to pump water into the south marsh. Herron Playa is managed for migratory waterfowl, shorebirds, upland game birds, small game and deer. The area is open to hunting by posted notice which allows the manager to monitor wildlife usage and adjust accordingly.
