CEDAR BLUFF TROUT SEASON DELAYED
Later turnover of stilling basin temporarily impairs water quality
HAYS -- Poor water quality conditions at the Cedar Bluff Stilling Basin have prompted Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) officials to delay the start of the annual trout season at Cedar Bluff.
With the season opening Sunday, Oct. 15, at designated areas, the Webster Stilling Basin and Scott State Park will provide northwest Kansas anglers the best opportunities for success. Smoky Gardens Lake near Goodland and the Glen Elder State Park Pond will not be stocked due to low water.
Mortality of recently-stocked trout at the Cedar Bluff Stilling Basin from water quality problems will delay the trout season there until the week of October 23. Lethal hydrogen sulfide and low dissolved oxygen levels brought on by a later than normal fall turnover of the basin's water has created conditions unfit for trout at this time. Within 10 to 14 days, the effects of the fall turnover should disappear, and additional trout will be stocked then.
During the interim, the Cedar Bluff Stilling Basin and the access road to it will be closed until Monday Oct. 23. This will allow KDWP staff to upgrade the road and parking area, improving overall access.
Remember, everyone -- whether they need a fishing license or not -- must purchase a trout permit to fish for and possess trout. Permits can be obtained at KDWP offices and various license vendors.
