Celebration and rededication of Toronto Lake in southeastern Kansas
TORONTO — On Oct. 16, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), Tulsa District, and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) will hold a 50th anniversary celebration and rededication of Toronto Reservoir in southeast Kansas.

The celebration, which is free and open to the public, will begin at sunrise with posting of the colors by the KDWP color guard and will feature various activities and events throughout the day. A rededication ceremony to commemorate the historic anniversary of the lake will begin at 10:30 a.m. with various speakers from COE and other agencies, as well as other officials.

In addition to the ceremony, events will include canoe/kayak tours, archery, skeet shooting, various exhibits, and a kids’ area featuring games and activities. The event will conclude at sundown with a concert by performing artist David Oakleaf, who appeared on Country Music Television’s show, “Can You Duet.” Vendors will sell food throughout the day, and free buffalo burgers will be served at the dinner hour.

Toronto Reservoir was authorized in the Flood Control Act of 1941 and is located on the Verdigris River, about 4 miles southeast of Toronto. Construction started on the lake in November 1954, and it was completed in February 1960. Impoundment began on March 15, 1960, and the lake reached conservation pool on March 21, 1960. The lake is a popular recreation destination for visitors throughout Kansas.
