Count helps scientists monitor different species, numbers, and associated plants
MANHATTAN — The North American Butterfly Association (NABA) will conduct a butterfly count at the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Manhattan Plant Materials Center (PMC) and surrounding area on Wednesday, July 14, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The count will help scientists monitor butterfly migration and get a good estimate of the different species, their numbers, and their relationship with plants and their natural environment.

“We are recruiting volunteers to help accomplish this count,” said Allen Casey, PMC soil conservationist. “While knowledge of butterflies is a plus, it is not necessary.”

Volunteers helping with the count should bring a sack lunch and bug spray, binoculars and camera, and dress appropriately for the weather. Volunteers must provide their own transportation. Participation in the count is free, but volunteers need to register by calling 785-539-8761 to ensure an adequate supply of materials and handouts are available. Special accommodations are available if requested at registration.

Volunteers will meet at the PMC and receive instructions on how to participate in the count. The count covers a 15 square-mile area with PMC the center of the circle.

Earth Team volunteers will assist with the count and will be recruited at the event. Earth Team volunteers expand NRCS services with their time, talent, and energy to help meet agency needs. Anyone age 14 or older who is interested in conserving natural resources is welcome to become a volunteer. Earth Team application forms will be available the day of the butterfly count. Anyone 14 through 17 years of age needs a signed parental consent form.
