In conjunction with Kansas Dept. of Wildlife and Parks (now KDWPT), the Corps of Engineers, Lake Nemaha Improvement Association, Ducks Unlimited and Nemaha County, a $1.2 million dollar project was completed in 2002 to restore a fishery in a portion of the dry lake bed and create a new wetland. The end result was a 125-acre wetlands and an 18-acre fish pond created from a borrow area for construction of the wetland berm.

Area News

Alfalfa food plots have been planted in the locations where there have been dove fields the past 2 years.  Hopefully these food plots will provide some good winter forage for deer and turkeys on the area!

History

The property was originally obtained by Nemaha County in 1934 to develop a recreational area as a memorial to the Veterans of the Spanish American War and World War 1. A lake was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and completed in 1939. The lake was turned over to the Kansas Forestry, Fish and Game Commission (now Kansas Wildlife, Parks and Tourism) for management. The lake was lost in 1986 when the spillway collapsed.
